MBWWT Intensification modular units - membrane bioreactor
The main advantage of the new line of MBWWT biological wastewater treatment plants is just the concept of a biological stage connected directly with a sludge separator. Instead of classic separation by sedimentation, the efficiency of which highly depends on the quality of sludge, separation by means of ultra-filtration membranes is used.
Advantages of this design are:
- The effectiveness of separation is independent of activated sludge sedimentation properties.
- Treated water that has passed through the membrane is bacteriologically clean and can be used as service water.
- Membrane separation intensifies the treatment process so much that residual CHSKCr concentrations are lower by 20 to 50% and BSK5 lower by approx. 30% compared with activated sludge separation by sedimentation.
- Suspended matters, colloids, and microorganisms cannot pass through the membrane.
- The separation properties of the membrane allow operating the biological stage with a significantly higher concentration of activated sludge.
- The effectiveness of the separator is stable. Treated water is separated from an activating mixture by means of a fixed barrier in the form of a membrane so that insufficiently treated water cannot leak into the outfall, which is usual in the case of a sedimentation separator.
- The membrane separator can be installed also in already existing biological wastewater treatment plants in order to intensify their operations and increase their capacities. Or the existing operation of both separation processes can be combined without construction work.
- Membrane separator operation is full-automatic and no permanent operator is required.
- In terms of designing, the membrane separator allows designing much compact units and thus saves cost of investments.
